Writing a book is hard; getting an ISBN shouldn't be. We explain what ISBN is, how to get it for ₹0 in India, and how to self-publish your first book without a big publisher.
Every Book Needs an Identity Card
Imagine trying to travel internationally without a passport. You can't. An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is exactly that—a passport for your book.
Whether you are writing the next Harry Potter or a guide on "How to Code in PHP," if you want to sell it in stores or online, you need this 13-digit number. Here is everything you need to know.
1. What is ISBN? (The "Aadhaar" for Books)
ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. It is a unique 13-digit code that identifies your specific book, edition, and format.
Why do you need it?
- Sales: Amazon, Flipkart, and bookstores need it to track inventory. No ISBN = No listing.
- Identity: It proves this book exists globally.
Note: You do NOT need an ISBN if you are just printing 50 copies to give to your family and friends as gifts.
2. Is it Free? (The Big Surprise)
YES. In India, ISBN is 100% FREE.
In countries like the USA, an ISBN costs over $100. But in India, the Ministry of Education (via the Raja Ram Mohan Roy National Agency) issues it for zero cost to encourage education and literature. Never pay an agent to buy an ISBN; you can do it yourself.
3. How to Get an ISBN in India (Step-by-Step)
The process is entirely digital now. No more mailing letters.
- Visit the Portal: Go to the official website:
isbn.gov.in. - Register: Create an account as an "Author/Publisher."
- Upload Documents: You will need your PAN Card, Aadhaar/Voter ID, and a copy of your book cover.
- Wait for Approval: Once approved, you apply for a specific number for your book title.
How long does it take?
Previously, it took months. Now, the process usually takes 1 to 4 weeks depending on the government workload. Plan ahead!
4. Who Can Publish? (Traditional vs. Self-Publishing)
Gone are the days when you had to beg a big publisher (like Penguin or HarperCollins) to read your manuscript. Today, YOU can be the publisher.
Option A: Traditional Publishing
They pay for printing, editing, and distribution. But they keep most of the profit and own the rights. It is very hard to get selected.
Option B: Self-Publishing (The Modern Way)
You are the boss. You own the rights. You keep 70-100% of the profit.
- E-books: Upload directly to Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing).
- Paperbacks: Use Print-on-Demand services (like NotionPress or Amazon Paperback) where copies are printed only when a customer buys one.
Summary
If you have written a manuscript, don't let it rot in your drawer.
- Register on
isbn.gov.in. - Get your Free ISBN.
- Upload your book to Amazon.
You are now a published author.
